What are the Deadliest Years for Airplane Crashes?
In 2014 alone, between March and July, nearly 700 passengers and crew members were killed in three separate airplane crashes. Despite such high casualties during a short amount of time, 2014 was not the deadliest year for airplane crashes. As this table demonstrates, hundreds of crashes during the 1940s-1990s resulted in high fatalities. To date, 1944 remains the deadliest year for flight. According to the Bureau of Aircraft Accidents Archives, over 4400 passengers and crew members died that year in 908 airplane crashes.
